The late spring flowers yellow green are insignificant but are followed by the non edible star shaped seed capsules that have a licorice scent DO NOT INGEST! The plant is not a substitute for the culinary spice and flavorings obtained from Illicium verum. Grows best in rich, moist well drained soils.
