The son of the realist painter Charles Degroux, Henry was devastated by his father's premature death and benefited from the protection of his elder brother, Flicien Rops. A draftsman, painter, sculptor, illustrator, and writer, he worked alongside Degouve de Nuncques, Ensor, Bloy, Mallarm, Zola, and many others.
