While the flowers open a dark cranberry scarlet, they soon take on the blue petal tips indicative of a cross with Lycoris sprengeri. Plants like this were referred to by Caldwell as Lycoris x jacksoniana, an invalid name referring to his hybrids of Lycoris radiata x
